Miami-Dade police officer Antonio Clemente Rodriguez has been “relieved of his duties” after video emerged of him punching a Black woman in the face at Miami International Airport Wednesday.

The incident occured after a ticketing agent called police on the woman who was complaining about a flight.

The situation escalated when police arrived and officer Rodriquez punched the woman after she got close to him. Before Rodriguez punchd the Black woman she said to Rodriguez “You acting like you white when you really Black…what you want to do?”

The video was recorded by South Florida filmmaker Billy Corbin.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez called the video “appalling.” “It’s excessive use of force and unnecessary,” said Gimenez on Twitter. “That’s NOT what our @MiamiDadePD are trained to do.”

Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez said on he has launched an investigation into the incident.

“I am shocked and angered by a body cam video that I just saw involving one of our officers,” Ramirez said. ” I’ve immediately initiated an investigation and ordered that the involved officers be relieved of duty. Actions such as these undermine the hard work that we have invested in our community and causes my heart to break for our community and for the vast majority of our officers who dedicate their lives to serving our County. This will not stand, and I assure our community that any officer acting in this vain will be held to account.”

Ramirez said he has asked Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle to investigate the use of force.

“Like so many in our community, I am angered when I see abusive or improper conduct by a police officer,” Fernandez Rundle said in a Thursday statement. “I have spoken to MDPD Director Ramirez about this incident and have my Public Corruption prosecutors gathering the body camera evidence and witness/victim testimony at this very moment.”
