The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has released video and audio surrounding the fatal shooting of a homeless Black man in San Clemente by a deputy last year that kicked off allegations of excessive force, prompting protests and a lawsuit.

Kurt Andras Reinhold, 42, was shot and killed on Sept. 23, 2020.

The video made public on Wednesday, Feb. 17 included dashcam footage, a cell phone video from a witness and motel surveillance. Also released was audio from the microphones the deputies wore. The Sheriff’s Department does not yet have body cameras.

The newly released dashcam footage shows when the two deputies on patrol spotted Reinhold near the Hotel Miramar at El Camino Real and Avenida San Gabriel at around 1:30 p.m.

There had been an outcry over whether deputies were justified in even stopping him. Previously the Orange County Sheriff’s Department did not detail why deputies approached the man, but in the material released Wednesday, Sgt. Dennis Breckner said the deputies saw Reinhold jaywalking.
