Donald Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court was denounced by those who say the judge has an “extreme” corporate bias against workers and that he would help overturn Roe vs. Wade.

“I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s decision to name Judge Neil Gorsuch as his nominee to be the next Supreme Court Justice. The president has indicated that his nominee would automatically overturn Roe v. Wade and be approved by radical right-wing organizations. These pre-qualifications present an immediate threat to our constitutional rights and freedoms,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee.  “The Supreme Court is the last line of defense for the protection of our civil and human rights. In order to qualify for a lifetime appointment to our nation’s highest court, a nominee must respect the constitutional rights of all Americans and prove that he or she will judge cases fairly, with an open mind, and without a political agenda.”

“The selection of our next Supreme Court Justice is not a decision we should take lightly, it will dramatically impact this generation and generations to come. The confirmation process must involve an in-depth review of Judge Gorsuch record,” she added.

“We must evaluate whether he will protect reproductive freedoms, civil and human rights for everyone, the separation of church and state and our environment among other issues of importance. As a member of the Congressional Black Caucus I believe Judge Gorsuch’s record on issues that impact the African American community, including affirmative action, civil rights, voting rights, and criminal justice reform must be thoroughly examined.”

“Our country sits on the brink of constitutional crisis.  Our nation deserves a Supreme Court nominee who will be faithful in upholding the Constitution of the United States, and fair in their interpretation and application of federal civil rights laws,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

“As we have done with all nominees, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will conduct an extensive evaluation of Judge Gorsuch’s jurisprudence and full record to determine whether he is qualified to sit on our nation’s highest court.”

Clarke added: “Looming over this moment is the fact that the current Supreme Court vacancy is the result of more than 300 days of tremendous political obstruction that has undermined the integrity of the Court as an institution. Thus, any new Justice must be someone who will restore the standing of the Court, while bringing true independence to the role. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will issue a full report regarding the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch. As a preliminary matter, we note that Judge Gorsuch has placed support for employers’ religious freedoms over the constitutional rights of employees. We urge the Senate to fully scrutinize and exhaustively examine Judge Gorsuch’s record.”

“President Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch this evening to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. It should not go unnoticed that he called on the Senate to give Judge Gorsuch a fair hearing, conveniently and dishonestly ignoring the disgraceful way he and the Republicans handled Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination,” said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, referring to Garland who was nominated by President Obama but who the Republicans never bothered to give a vote consideration.

“In Neil Gorsuch, Trump has nominated an extremist judge intent on overturning basic, well-established Supreme Court precedents. Gorsuch’s record raises significant concerns about his ability to be fair and to respect and follow the law rather than his own ideology, including repeatedly taking the side of corporations over consumers and workers.”
