Five Memphis officers have been charged in the brutal beating death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, who died on Jan. 10, after needing hospitalization following a Jan. 7 traffic stop.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith were reportedly taken into custody after a grand jury indicted them Thursday.

Bean, Haley, Martin, Mills and Smith were all charged with: second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct and official oppression.

On Wednesday, Police Chief CJ Davis called Nichols deadly beating “heinous, reckless, and inhumane.”

Chief Davis said, in part, “Aside from being your chief of police, I am a citizen of this community, we share; I am a mother, I am a caring human being who wants the best for all of us; this is not just a professional failing. This is a failing of basic humanity toward another individual. This incident was heinous, reckless, and inhumane; and in the vein of transparency when the video is released in the coming days, you will see this for yourselves.”
