On the same day an intruder assaulted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband at their San Francisco home early Friday morning, federal officials announced a man pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Bay Area congressman Eric Swalwell, and issued a broader warning about politically motivated violence in advance of Election Day.

The events reflect the increasingly dangerous political climate the country finds itself in less than two weeks ahead of the contentious midterm elections. On Saturday, elected officials across the political spectrum continued to reckon with the growing specter of violence aimed at politicians.

President Joe Biden, voting early in his home state of Delaware, blamed divisive political rhetoric for spurring on the man who bludgeoned Paul Pelosi with a hammer, leaving him hospitalized with a fractured skull.

“You can’t just say, ‘we feel badly about the violence, we condemn it,'” he said. “Condemn what produces the violence, and this talk produces the violence.”
