Like a deadly virus, Donald Trump just will not go away. The Mar-a-Lago swamp rat has returned.

The disgraceful twice impeached president announced Tuesday that he will run for president in 2024. What does Trump’s attempt to regain the presidency mean for American democracy but more trouble and disaster?

Trump, a wannabe dictator, after attempting to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election results, now thinks he can depend on right-wing Americans to help him retake power. And given the storming of the U.S. Capitol by MAGA terrorists on Jan. 6, 2021, and the fanatical devotion of his supporters, Trump’s announcement should not be taken lightly.

The most blatantly corrupt president in American history is trying to slither his way back into the White House. The overthrow of the American Republic is clearly still at risk.

We should all remember when Trump talked about shooting people, on Fifth Avenue, and not losing the support of Republican voters. That statement must be remembered within the context of the coup plot he orchestrated which led to Jan 6.

Ever since that infamous day, Republican politicians became more afraid of Trump because: it demonstrated that he is much beloved by the Republican base—including the most violent gun-toting racists in America. Republicans were also cowering and hiding from Trump’s MAGA terrorists as they wreaked havoc inside the halls of Congress.

These Republicans—like former Vice-President Mike Pence—also realize this man would gladly sacrifice their lives, and that of their families, to cling to power.

And now that Trump is facing numerous court cases for his criminality (including a possible prison sentence in Georgia, for election tampering) he is more dangerous to the internal security of the nation than ever before.

However, we should not expect craven GOP leaders to stand up to this national disgrace. Republicans have been unmasked, during the Trump era, as nothing more than power at all cost politicians. What happened to all their holier-than-thou showboating recitations of “country before party?”

If Republicans had stood up on principal and voted to convict this criminal conman, particularly during the second impeachment, after the Capitol Hill coup attempt, the nation would not have to be seriously thinking about another Trump presidency.

Ironically, Trump is doing major damage to the Republican Party. Republicans are now licking their wounds after lackluster midterm elections. The “red wave” they were expecting to sweep them to victory was not to be.

Imagine, former Republican New York Governor George Pataki made a FOX media appearance to say he wished “Trump would ride off into sunset.” Pataki followed that comment, days later, saying Trump was “tearing apart the Republican Party.” But where were people like Pataki when Trump was tearing apart the nation by encouraging and inflaming every type of ugly prejudice among America’s citizenry? It’s only a problem now because he is causing Republicans elections?

Forget about tearing apart the Republican Party. Trump intends to use violent, racist, right-wing Americans to tear Americans apart so he can regain political power. Moreover, he intends to do this regardless of the 2024 results.

Here is a sobering thought: the longer Trump remains free the more likely we will see a repeat of what happened on Jan 6., 2021.
