WASHINGTON – Rep. Shontel M. Brown asked the Department of Justice to monitor the investigation of the killing of Jayland Walker. Walker’s death is currently under investigation, while the eight officers in question are on paid administrative leave. Walker was reportedly killed in a hail of 90 shots fired by police–with some 60 shots hitting his body.

“The senseless killings of unarmed Black Americans are tragic events our country continues to relive,” said Rep. Brown. “We owe it to Jayland Walker and his family to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation of his death.”

In a letter penned to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Rep. Brown urged the DOJ to monitor the investigation so, “…communities in Northeast Ohio are assured that a full and fair investigation will be conducted that accurately portrays the facts and makes findings consistent with those facts.”

“Black communities have been punished for far too long by investigations that leave us with more unanswered questions than facts. Our communities must be able to say with complete confidence that they believe law enforcement agencies have performed a fair and just investigation in difficult times like these to begin rebuilding public trust.”
