King Center Joins UN In International Day of Nonviolence Celebration

ATLANTA, GA. — The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) will join the United Nations’ (UN) commemoration of the International Day of Nonviolence (observed annually on October 2nd ) beginning with the CEO of The King Center and the daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Dr. Bernice A. King, speaking at the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) nonviolence panel discussion on Nonviolence; ‘Education for Human Flourishing, A Conversation with Mahatma Gandhi’, on Friday, September 30, 2022. The panel will be live-streamed at 3:00 pm ET via IndiaatUnitedNations).

To further the education and training of local youth in Kingian nonviolence, The King Center also announces the launch of a new partnership with DeKalb County, GA, in support of the DeKalb County Youth Safety and Violence Prevention Initiative.

“The King Center is honored to join with the UN in commemorating the

International Day of Nonviolence, an important day for all global citizens to embrace the redemptive power of nonviolence at home, in their local communities, and in the

workplace,” said Dr. Bernice A. King. “We thank DeKalb County for the opportunity to

support local youth in their education and understanding of nonviolence.”

“We have to do everything we can to prevent acts of senseless violence that are plaguing our nation,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. “This funding opportunity will help support organizations like The King Center that are already working to reduce violence, keep youth off of the streets and invest in the lives of our youth.”

In support of the International Day of Nonviolence, The King Center’s bookstore will feature a special discount on items about Dr. King’s nonviolence methodology and philosophy from today until October 2nd. The goal is to encourage our global community to learn more about nonviolence.
