The Movement for Black Lives released the following statement regarding the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“The Movement for Black Lives sends condolences to the family and loved ones of the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. For decades, she stood for an end to discrimination in all of its forms and fought to protect marginalized and targeted communities across this country. She fought bravely on the Supreme Court until her last breath in the face of encroaching fascism.

“We are in the fight of our lives, and we know that it is up to us to beat back the forces of racism and injustice that divide us and leave our people vulnerable to harm.

“As we continue to reckon with this administration and Mitch McConnell’s failed pandemic response, our nation has lost more than 200,000 souls, millions have lost their jobs, and an uprising against racism and police violence has spread across our country. But, instead of focusing on these urgent concerns, McConnell is planning to ram through a divisive Supreme Court pick and continue the administration’s legacy of political court-packing. This November, the most pressing issues of the day– issues that are life-or-death for all of us — are on the ballot. The loss of Justice Ginsberg is yet another reminder that our democracy is hanging in the balance, and it’s going to take the power of social movements to ensure that white supremacy, capitalism, sexism and other forms of oppression don’t persist. Fighting for true democracy is our collective responsibility and we have to mobilize, organize and come together across movements like never before.

“We are asking people to take a stand today. Justice Ginsberg’s death is already being used as a pawn in a political game by those in power, but we are the ones with everything to lose. Call your members of congress and demand that they push back against Mitch McConnell’s blatant and hypocritical campaign to push the Senate to confirm a successor to Justice Ginsberg before the next president takes office. We have the power to decide how this moment in our history ends. As Justice Ginsberg said, ‘Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.’ So what step are you willing to take to defend democracy in this moment?”

About M4BL:

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) formed in December of 2014, was created as a space for Black organizations across the country to debate and discuss the current political conditions, develop shared assessments of what political interventions were necessary in order to achieve key policy, cultural and political wins, convene organizational leadership in order to debate and co-create a shared movement wide strategy under the fundamental idea that we can achieve more together than we can separately.
