AFSCME delegates adopted a landmark resolution on police reform at the union’s 44th International Convention. Delegates constitute the highest governance body within the union, which represents approximately 90,000 sworn and unsworn public safety officers.
The resolution reaffirms AFSCME’s support for collective bargaining and due process rights for police officers, along with advocating a series of reforms to confront racism.
“AFSCME’s storied history of fighting for civil rights and economic justice continues with this big step forward to confront racism while protecting the rights and freedoms of all working people – including law enforcement and public safety officers – to join a union and gain the due process rights that come with it,” said AFSCME President Lee Saunders. “We believe the two can and must go hand in hand. I am proud that our union is at the vanguard of ensuring deep-seated racial injustice are addressed – whether that’s in our criminal justice, our political system or in any branch of government.”
Among the key reforms in the resolution:
The resolution adopted Thursday builds on AFSCME’s ongoing work to achieve racial justice while shoring up public safety. Those efforts include a resolution the union adopted at its 2016 convention to bridge the gap between the public safety officers and the communities they live and work in. The 2016 resolution called for creating “a law enforcement workforce that is reflective of the communities they serve” and “national standards and policies regarding the use of lethal force.”
Delegates in this year’s convention also passed a resolution on racial justice that recommits the union to confronting and rooting out systemic racism.
“We look forward to working with leaders and employers across the country to implement these reforms to heal our communities, prevent violence against Black Americans and ensure that the memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many more lives on,” Saunders said. “Our nation must learn from its tragic mistakes. AFSCME is committed to being a partner in that vital pursuit.”
AFSCME's 1.4 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in communities across the nation, serving in hundreds of different occupations — from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and freedom and opportunity for all working families.
Milton, are you denying or finding it insignificant that the TPLF attacked a federal army base...
