Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib will open a panel discussion with activists of color on Thurs., Feb. 25. The discussion will explore the rights of racial-justice advocates in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol--and will tackle the topic of white supremacy.

The panel entitled "Safety, Not Surveillance: Resisting Criminalization After Crisis" will be held starting at 12 noon. To register for this Zoom event, which will be live captioning along with ASL interpretation, go here.

Historically, violent events and national crises — like the Jan. 6 white-supremacist insurrection — have been used to justify the use of harsh surveillance and policing tools that undermine the rights of Black and Brown communities.

MediaJustice, Free Press Action, the ACLU and Color Of Change will bring together organizers and experts representing diverse communities under constant surveillance by law enforcement, including the FBI. Together they will urge Congress and the Biden administration to root out white supremacy in law enforcement and end the criminalization of Black and Brown dissent.

Participants in this event will include:

  • Myaisha Hayes, moderator (MediaJustice)
  • Jacinta González (Mijente),
  • Mike German (Brennan Center for Justice),
  • Maya Berry (Arab American Institute),
  • Adjoa Aiyetoro (The Black and Brown Activism Defense Collective),
  • Evan Feeney (Color Of Change),
  • Sijal Nasralla (MPower Change),
  • Sandra Fulton (Free Press Action)
  • Reuben Telushkin (Detroit activist with Jewish Voices for Peace)
