Congress Should Act on the Will of the American People and Pass Permanent Protections for Dreamers and TPS and DED Holders.

On Tuesday, June 4th, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, which would provide permanent protections for immigrant youth – Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders. America’s Voice recommends a vote for the rule, against the Motion to Recommit, and for the final passage of the bill without damaging amendments.

The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director for America’s Voice:

“The House of Representatives should stand up for a more expansive and welcoming America and pass the Dream and Promise Act. Each of the 2.5 million individuals who stand to benefit are Americans in all but paperwork. Trump is destabilizing American communities by insisting that millions of law abiding, long term residents be made deportable by ending DACA, DED, and TPS protections. The clock is ticking for many of them, so Congress cannot delay. We must address the damage Trump is doing by increasing the number of families who face deportation of loved ones, against the wishes of the American people. These longtime residents, valued students and workers, are part of American families in communities all across the country. It’s time for the full House to affirm what the American public already knows: extend formal recognition to Dreamers and TPS and DED holders as the Americans they already are. This legislation to protect Dreamers and TPS and DED holders helps immigrants, strengthens our economy, and keeps families together. Approving legislation that is overwhelmingly supported by the American people is uncontroversial and should be approved without delay.”

Polling from Global Strategy Group and released last week by FWD.us underscores that the American people are overwhelmingly on the side of Dreamers and strengthening related protections and opportunities. By a 4:1 margin, (77% to 18%), the American public overwhelmingly supports citizenship and permanent protections and opportunities for Dreamers, including strong majorities of each partisan affiliation supporting citizenship.
