Sending Out An SOS: An Open Letter To The Electoral College

How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn’t see?”- Bob Dylan

In Stephen King’s 1979 novel the Dead Zone, the central character Johnny Smith- after a five year coma- awakens with the the ability of “precognition,” seeing into the future of anybody he touches.

When Smith shakes the hand of presidential candidate Greg Stillson while campaigning in New Hampshire, he envisions that the politician will be elected president and start a nuclear war while in office. The narrative’s central question thus becomes:  “If you could jump into a time machine and go back to 1932, would you kill Hitler?”

In 2016, members of the electoral college do not need physic abilities in order to gauge just how similar America’s current presidential elect Donald Trump is to King’s fictional politician of doom. Trump’s delusional and flamboyant presidential run in 2015-16 clearly demonstrated he was so unevenly tempered and thin skinned that even the majority of Republican primary voters deemed him totally unfit for office. It was 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney that expressed it best: “If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished.”

Romney continued: “Now, I’m far from the first to conclude that Donald Trump lacks the temperament to be president. After all, this is an individual who mocked a disabled reporter, who bragged about his marital affairs, and who laces his public speeches with vulgarity. Donald Trump says he admires Vladimir Putin, at the same time he has called George W. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good. Mr. Trump is directing our anger for less than noble purposes. He creates scapegoats of Muslims and Mexican immigrants. He calls for the use of torture. He calls for killing the innocent children and family members of terrorists. He cheers assaults on protesters. He applauds the prospect of twisting the Constitution to limit First Amendment freedom…This is the very brand of anger that has led other nations into the abyss. Here’s what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University.”

Before you in the electoral college vote for Trump on December 19, 2016- the real election day in America- please consider Romney’s haunting warning. But of course Trump’s long “less then noble” life if saturated with poisonous, radioactive accounts of poor judgment, fraudulent behavior, sociopathic tendencies and downright evil intentions. The Access Hollywood tape was way more profound then the media explored. Vulgarity aside, it highlights the mind set of someone who seeks out pleasure regardless of the pain it causes the victim. Not only is that the textbook definition of a sociopath, it is also the very strain of behavior found in some of most vile tyrants of world history.

One of those tyrants, Adolf Hitler-  has been lauded by generations of Trumps. In September, 1990 Vanity Fair wrote that Trump’s first wife, Ivana discussed an old Trump “family joke,” where Donald “clicks his heels and says ‘ Heil Hitler’ and “from time to time…reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.”

Who gave “you the Hitler speeches?” VF asked Trump.

Trump hesitated. “Who told you that?”

Trump added, “actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of Mein Kampf, and he’s a Jew.”

Davis disagreed with Trump’s version- “I did give him a book about Hitler, but it was My New Order, Hitler’s speeches, not Mein Kampf. I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I’m not Jewish.”

When VF confronted him on Davis’ account, Trump sheepishly replied, If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.”

What is so unseemly about this underplayed story simple. That on December 19, 2016, somebody who admires Hitler is about to rubber stamped into the office of President of the United States by 538 “electors.”

Tyrants of history also tend to gravitate to other tyrants of history. So when Trump quoted Mussolini in a 2/28/16 tweet:  “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep,” it is yet another pattern of authoritarian personalty traits that fits. So to when Trump expresses admiration for his puppet master, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and the Chinese Government’s 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, telling Playboy in 1990, “The Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak.”

In 2016 MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough( a former GOP congressman from Florida) reported that “several months ago, a foreign policy expert went to advise Donald Trump and ‘three times’ he asked about the use of nuclear weapons —  At one point saying, ‘If we have them, why can’t we use them?’”

“If we have them, why can’t we use them?” That is who you in the electoral college want to vote into office for President of the United States of America? I am willing to bet that the majority of you supported another candidate during the GOP primaries like Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz. Why? Because you know. You know the truth-as many in the GOP- about just how dangerous Trump really is.

And nothing underscores this more than Trump’s latest tweet since the election theorizing about ways to strip Americans of their citizenship, something the US Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional in 1958 as “cruel and unusual.”

Everyone currently is the electoral college saw Trump look at a 10-girl riding an Trump Tower escalator, envisioning sexual relationship with her. Trump asks one of of a group of 10-year-old girls if she’s “going up the escalator.” When the girl replies, “yeah,” Trump says: “I am going to be dating her in 10 years. Can you believe it?

Can you believe that their are 538 American citizens in the electoral college that stand between the office of U.S. Presidency and a Charles Manson like psychopath taking it over? Yes it is up you to vote on a POTUS who does not have the temperament to run a deli, a POTUS who admires Hitler and Putin and wants to “use nukes” somehow(my guess would be North Korea or in the Middle East).

Here is the irony. You in the electoral college don’t have to vote for Donald Trump. In fact founding father Alexander Hamilton, implores you in writing to set aside the electoral numbers and look at other leading factors that unfolded during the course the election, like a judge overseeing a jury verdict that can be tossed aside. For example, Hillary Clinton won more than two and half million more votes than the so-called “winner” Donald Trump, despite the FBI and Putin’s malicious interference with our democracy and our democratic process. As Hamilton wrote, you are not a cog in a machine as the TV people propagate, the founding fathers believed that “the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president].”

In fact Hamilton primary believed that the electoral college should act as counter balance- even if a demagogue wins an landslide election- to reverse an election so that “the office of president will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.”

If Trump’s campaign and “transition” is not an indicator of someone without “qualifications,” then just what is? Trump tweeting lie after lie -like how he won the majority of votes on election day- is already getting older than Bush after Katrina- does the electoral college really want to impose this corrosive, destructive force onto America for another four years? Must we as nation have to be subjected to this psycho’s warped views on race, religion and reality until 2021? Like any fascist foreign policy, the essence of Trump’s presidency will be war. Are you ready to be responsible for what Trump does to distract his followers from all his soon to be broken promises?

If there was a way the electoral college could vote Mark Rubio or even Ted Cruz into office on December 19, 2016, under the circumstances I would be all for that. Unfortunately, you have two choices: Hillary Clinton (who no one can argue is unqualified for office and who received 2.5 million more votes than her opponent) or an American Psycho.

A psycho who is so passionately hated in his hometown of Manhattan and home state of New York that he lost NYC to Ohio Governor John Kasich in the primary and lost New York state to Clinton in November. If Trump cant win an election in his home state, from the people who know him best( in fact Trump was loudly booed both coming in and out of his own polling place, an underrepresented occurrence in the history of American presidential elections and truly the genesis of the post-election Anti-Trump movement) then you know he is rotten to the core, even for NYC’s low standards.

As you contemplate your decision between now and 12/19, as a parent and a citizen this nation and world, I beseech all of you in the electoral college to prevent Trump from walking into the oval office on January 20, 2017 and instead vote in the only reasonable choice for president in 2016, Hillary Rodham Clinton. For if Trump becomes president, you will incite this nation and the world into total rebellion against his every move and as Mitt Romney said earlier this year, this nation and the world will be plunged “into the abyss.”

History will show you no mercy if you set in motion what Trump is about unleash across the globe. All of it will be on your shoulders for the rest of your lives. Or you can be one of the bravest American heroes of our time, a real life Johnny Smith- and you don’t have even pull a trigger.
