In a dramatic check on Donald Trump’s pen a U.S. federal judge in Seattle late Friday stayed his so-called “Muslim Ban” executive order with immediate impact throughout the country.
The Department of Homeland Security ordered its employees throughout the country to obey the judge’s order according to the Associated Press.
U.S. District Senior Judge James L. Robart ruled that Minnesota and Washington state had standing to challenge the president’s executive order temporarily barring people from seven Muslim majority countries. The White House has said it plans to challenge the stay, initially calling it “outrageous.”
The Associated Press reported that about 60,000 people from the seven countries had their visas cancelled as a result of the Trump ban.
Federal defendants “and their respective officers, agents, servants, employees, attorneys and persons acting in concert or participation with them are hereby enjoined and restrained from” enforcing Trump’s executive order, the judge ruled.
The temporary restraining order was made because the state
“met its burden in demonstrating immediate and irreparable injury,” jude Robart ruled.
U.S. senator called the ruling a victory for the nation’s system of democracy.
“I was heartened by Judge Robart’s decision to halt the Trump administration’s immigration order,” Sanders, (I-Vt) said. “The administration’s executive order raises very serious constitutional questions, has thrown the enforcement of our immigration laws into chaos and further sewn divisive, xenophobic and hateful rhetoric into our national discussion. The executive order’s religious test runs afoul of our constitutional protections and who we are as a nation. This was a good day for our system of checks and balances.”
